Ward Councillors

As part of our modern democracy the eThekwini metro is divided into a number of “Wards” each of these wards elect a Councilor who represents the people in that ward for a 5 year term.

 

The last election was held in 2011, to ensure that you can vote at the next election in 2016, check that you are registered with the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission).

The Millennium Tower

The Millennium Tower on the Bluff is a familiar sight to many residents of Glenwood. The tower was built after a design competition to commemorate the Millennium. It has become a landmark both for visiting ships and residents of Durban.

We have had new street names in and around Durban for a while, but every now and then some still asks who was …?

So here is the “official”, as provided by the Durban Metro, history of the new road names in and around Glenwood.

John Beaver Marks was born on 21 March 1903 in a small town in the Western Transvaal known as Ventersdorp. In 1928 he joined the African National Congress and became the President of the Transvaal Branch of the ANC. He studied a diploma in teaching. He was chairman of South African Communist Party and a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress. In 1942 he was elected to the presidency of the Transvaal Council of non-European trade unions, and in the same year he became the president of the African Mine Workers Union.
